Material:
DragonBoard® is manufactured from mineral components, with fibrous reinforcement, and does not contain any toxic ingredients or asbestos. It is light tan to cream in color. Standard production material is very smooth on one side and sand-textured rough on the other. Standard edges are square or tapered. Special edges are available on order.
Size:
The standard thicknesses of the 4’x 8’ panels are: 6mm (1/4”), 8mm (3/8”), 10mm (7/16”), 12mm (1/2”), 14mm (9/16”), 16mm (5/8”), 18mm (3/4”), and 25mm (1”). Other sizes and thicknesses can be ordered.
Properties:
FIRE RESISTANT: Tests under modified ASTM E-119, performed on a 4 inch thick wall panel assembly of steel studs and one 10mm (7/16”) DragonBoard skin on each side, with a layer of fiberglass wool filler between the skins, resulted in 2 hour fire rating. The same test with one 14mm (9/16”) DragonBoard skin on each side resulted in 3 hour fire rating. The same material is rated 0,0 for flame spread and smoke propagation under ASTM E-84. WATER RESISTANT: DragonBoard has been subjected to a controlled immersion test where samples of 10mm and 14mm thick DragonBoard were placed in closed container of water and exposed to freeze and thaw cycles for a period of 36 months. At the completion of the test, there was no appreciable change in the physical properties of DragonBoard. BUG FREE, FUNGUS / MOLD FREE: DragonBoard does not support insect life and is non-nutrient to mold or fungus growth. It has been tested for fungus resistant properties under ASTM G-21 and found to be non-nutrient. This non-nutrient property is inherent in the DragonBoard composition. IMPACT RESISTANT: DragonBoard’s strength is in the same order of magnitude as plywood and can be used as sub-floor and in the areas where high impact resistance is needed, such as hallways, laboratories, and public places. The special designed high impact DragonBoard wall assemblies can pass the "missile test" required by Florida to sustain the high wind of hurricane.
Installation:
FABRICATION: DragonBoard may be scored and snapped, cut, trimmed, drilled or shaped using ordinary power or hand tools. The use of a dust mask is recommended for cutting operations. FASTENING: DragonBoard panels may be fastened to supporting joists using self-drilling, self-countersinking, corrosion protected cement board screws. Fasteners should be spaced at 12” intervals along edges. Spacing may be increased to 18” at intermediate joists. CAUTIONS: Fasteners should not be closer than 2 inches from a corner, with the adjoining screw not less than 4 inches from the same corner. Do not install screws on 45 degree angles at corners. Board ends must be supported by joists. Fasteners must always be installed over supporting structure. Do not install surface coverings by driving screw fasteners except over supporting structure. Cantilever overhangs are not recommended. Fasteners should not be closer than ¾” to any edge. Do not fasten coverings directly to DragonBoard with mechanical fasteners (nails, screws, staples, etc.).
Finishing:
The smooth side of the DragonBoard is suitable for painting or wallpapering with no further preparation, and the rough side is suitable for application of ceramic tile. Either solvent based oil paint or water based latex paint can be used. If the panels are to be directly exposed to rain and weather, it may be desirable to apply a prime coat of acrylic-siloxane waterproofing sealer, followed by oil based paint. Where DragonBoard is to be used as a mounting surface for ceramic tile, as in a bath or shower enclosure, the use of solvent based tile mastic is recommended.
